Electrical Standards Made Simple

Why is this web-site here ?

This website is intended to provide summaries, clarifications and interpretations of some of the BC Hydro electrical and civil construction standards. Only those standards are included that stem from most widely requested service requests. The most popular residential service requests tend to be upgrades and heavy-ups during residential single dwelling and one-to-two lot sub-division; both underground and overhead service requests. Single phase still exceeds three phase service requests in most BC regions.

The need for more energy has never been higher across BC. Industrial sector is leading the share of total electrical energy consumption followed by residential and commercial. Unusual weather conditions have affected how electricity is used. In 2021, BC Hydro recorded all-time high electricity demand during both the summer and winter, driven by intense heatwaves and cold snaps.

Understanding of BC Hydro standards and their use greatly simplifies the service request from a customer point of view. Understanding the applicable standards and requirements helps to prevent non-compliance and delay of energization of a service. Ultimately by understanding what BC Hydro wants the customer can avoid unnecessary delays and costly mistakes.

This is why interpretation and understanding of the standards and requirements is so important for both the customer and the electrician working for the customer.
